[xubuntu-users] Desktop fails to start after login - after 13.04 to 13.10 upgrade

I've just tried that (thanks for the idea), no change at all.

However there was one extra thing, just after entering my password at
the login screen there was a momentary pop-up window saying something
about a 'System Problem' but it disappeared before I could read any
more.  Thence on to the screen with a mouse and no cursor.
