The printer is connected via USB to my desktop computer. On the desktop 
it works fine. In the house there are three laptops in use. All four 
machines are running Xubuntu 12.04.

I cannot get any of the laptops to print directly to the printer. As 
explained in another reply on this thread, if I try to print from a 
laptop to the printer attached to the desktop it all appears to work but 
the request never reaches the desktop computer. The job appears on the 
laptop but does not appear on the desktop so the printer knows nothing 
about it.
