Stephen, I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you.  But I can at least
offer you the consolation that I have the problem too.  I'm not sure what
your host machine is running - it sounds like Windows.  I've tried it on two
different hosts, one is running Xubuntu Precise and the other is my test
Saucy machine.  I've used both 4.2.16 and 4.2.18 of Virtualbox.  I can
install a Raring guest and it accesses a shared folder fine.  When I install
another guest the exact same way with the latest version of Saucy, my shared
folder appears empty.

I have filed bug 1239384 for it on Launchpad.  If you have a Launchpad
account and want to confirm the bug, that would be good. One of the guys on
the -devel list said he would try to reproduce it too.

Thanks for the note.  Unfortunately, I don't have a Launchpad account so I
can't confirm the bug.

I took the easy way out and installed the distribution in NMware Player
without any problems.
