Try the workround mentioned on 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/Roadmap/Specifications/Trusty/Gtk3Indicators


    As a workaround, put "INDICATOR_ALLOW_NO_WATCHERS=yes" in
    /etc/environment and reboot.
