[xubuntu-users] Inexplicable issue with sound on 14.04

I have an odd issue with sound that I hope someone can help me
troubleshoot. I've looked at all of the logs and can't seem to find
anything related to the problem so I'm turning here.

If I run Audacity or other sound recording program, the software can
hear me and record through my mic with no problem. I can even use Jitsi
(a VoIP program) with no problem. But if I try to use Skype or Google
Voice, neither can hear me at all!

Any idea what might be the issue here or where I might even look to
troubleshoot?
