Now might be the time to learn how to use apt-get and dpkg, the twin
backbones of the Debian/Ubuntu file installation and distribution system.
You can try 'man apt-get' and 'man dpkg' for more information, Also, the
Ubuntu online forums have pages and pages of help on how to use apt-get and
dpkg.
Synaptic and the Software Center give you very little control over where
packages go, how they function etc. The command line functions allow you
the flexibility of being control of repository access and file download.
The only downside is that it's easier to make mistakes which could brick
your computer. Still, it's worth it to know how to use the commands, even
if you use them rarely.
