[xubuntu-users] Can't sign in to xubuntu desktop, infinite login loop

Hi, I'm new to the group--
I experienced the same issue on July 5th or 6th. I am running Xubuntu and
I removed .Xauthority, viewed the xsession logs, tried changing ownerships
and groups of files and directories. In the end I was so desperate after
google left me hopeless that I switched to a console and
*sudo apt-get purge x11* xubuntu-desktop lightdm nvidia** #Nvidia is my
graphics card, and I was using proprietary drivers.
*sudo apt-get install x11-common xubuntu-desktop*
...and I think that brought me back up so that I could login without the
loop. My recollection is fuzzy because I've been fussing with a ubuntu
server and trying to setup a openvpn for myself- so there's been a lot
going on in my mind with different systems.
If in the end, it may be less frustrating for you to just reinstall your
OS, since you (hopefully) put your /home on a different partition.
