[xubuntu-users] unwanted packages

Recently I upgraded to Xubuntu 14.04. That is to say it was a new
installation not an upgrade. I notice that it includes some programs
that I don't really need or want. Two examples are pidgin and zeitgeist.

Is it all right to simply remove these or might that cause problems?
Are there some programs which should be left alone and simply not used?
