I added this to the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf (which was empty before):

[SeatDefaults]
allow-guest=false
greeter-hide-users=true
# greeter-show-manual-login=true

The greeter-show-manual-login=true appears to be the default, so
enabling it makes no difference.

I tried greeter-hide-users=false, but it still did not show the list of users.

It also still does not remember the previous login user, but at least
this way I don't have to select "other" before logging in.
