On real optical mice, I've found the cleanliness, dirtiness and surface
of the mouse pad can have up to a 3x influence on the mouse sensitivity.

I usually start by uninstalling PulseAudio. That changes things from a
needle in a haystack to a needle in an ashtray.
If ALSA is installed, I check all devices in ALSAmixer for mutes. If
it's OSS only, I install an OSS mixer like rexima and modprobe
snd_mixer_oss.
These steps don't fix every sound problem, but they fix a heck of a lot
of them.
