I can't tell you why this happens, or explain it, but I can tell you how
I fixed my system.

This is not really a "fix", it's merely a workaround.

I'm going to assume that your mouse cursor is defaulting to DMZ-White.
That's what my system was doing.

Here are the steps I took. My cursor theme of choice was BlueShinyCursors.

All of this is done in a terminal window. I am purposefully leaving out
some details, if you need more help feel free to ask.

1) First, I installed (copied) BlueShinyCursors into /home/<user>/.icons

2) Copy BlueShinyCursors to /usr/share/icons
    Command: "sudo cp -r ~/.icons/BlueShinyCursors /usr/share/icons"
(without the quotes)

3) Change into the /usr/share/icons directory
    Command: "cd /usr/share/icons"

4) Verify that BlueShinyCursors was successfully copied here
    Command: "ls -l"
    BlueShinyCursors folder should be in the list

5) DMZ-White should also be in the "ls -l" list

6) Copy a backup of DMZ-White to your home folder
    Command: "cp -r /usr/share/DMZ-White /home/<user>"

Now we're going to fix the problem with a workaround ...

7) Change into the DMZ-White folder
    Command: "cd DMZ-White"

8) Just for grins see what's in the folder
    Command: "ls -l"
    You should see three items:
    cursors  - this is a folder
    cursor.theme
    index.theme

9) Now we need to edit the cursor.theme file
    Command: " sudo nano cursor.theme"

    Change the second line from:
    Inherits=DMZ-White

    To:
    Inherits=BlueShinyCursors  (or any theme located in /usr/share/icons)

10) Save the file, close nano, close the terminal, log out, log in, and
your chosen cursor theme should be working as expected.
