Could it be a 64 bit problem? I am on 16.04 i386 and use both synaptic
and apt-get with out problems. I've never tried 64 bit as I have a
'test' older machine which I use if I have trouble - so I am too lazy
to burn a DVD for both. So many places I have read that there is
little difference between the two so I've not bothered testing x64
out.
