I installed redshift without any trouble.
I am using elementary os running on ubuntu 16.04
sudo apt install redshift && sudo apt install -f
Maybe you might have some packages that you need to install
that maybe were not included when you installed redshift.
elementary os uses gala as it's windows manager.
Not sure if your window manager xfwm4 is part of your problem.
You can try installing gala to see if it makes a difference.
Hope this helps.
