Given a minute to think further, I read somewhere that we needed a jail 
system installed; the recommendation was firejail. To run zoom I had to 
add firejail as a prefix to the zoom entry in my menu

Then the .deb on the zoom site worked.


Before I found that hint, I was running zoom in a vbox of Mint, with 
access to the guest ONLY for what I absolutely needed - not much as I 
recall
