Hello Ralf:
Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been adjusting my list
subscription preferences to make sure I get responses to my posts here.
(I only saw your response when I logged back in to the server and
checked the list archive. Then I was having trouble replying to the
message in the archive via Gmail. Ultimately installed Thunderbird.
Still fighting problems there, so this may still not make it to the list.

I don't remember explicitly installing gvfs, but it certainly may have
been installed when I installed something as a dependency.

Not sure how I would use strace to monitor what clicking on a folder on
the desktop would do.

Top shows nemo starting right away, but the folder doesn't open for
between 15 and 30 seconds.

I have some of each of these on my desktop. In the simplest case, a
folder in ~/Desktop/<folder> exhibits the delay.

Pretty much what I would expect. (Long listing of everything on the
Desktop including '.' files, with sizes in suffixed units like K,M,G,
but no delay.) Something you are looking for?

No delay. If I immediately double click on the folder, it took 25
seconds to open this time.

Interesting. No delay using spacefm. It should be noted that although I
installed spacefm-gtk3, I only found spacefm executable.

For the time being, I'll leave it installed, but it WOULD be good to
know what causes the delay with Thunar and Nemo.

Thanks for your comments, Ralf.
