As you describe it, your sound is doing through an HDMI cable connected
to your video card, presumably going to speakers in your monitor.

So, do you have speakers in your monitor that can get sound through HDMI
and not a separate audio cable?

I ask this question because you have not provided any info about your
audio setup and where the audio should be going.

Another option is to try restarting pulse audio. System76 has an
excellent audio trouble-shooting guide at
