[xubuntu-users] 20.04 install issue: Monitor resolution bad

Hi,

I have been with mythbuntu 14.04 as I have not been able to upgrade
to xubuntu 16.04/18.04 and now to 20.04. Every time, I try to do a fresh
install, I hit some snag and I have to give up. Hopefully, this time I
am able to resolve it before hitting the point of no return.

Here is what I did in my install. I get the usb done and boot. First
the usb stick boots to 4K with tiny little characters as my TV  is 4K
(doubles as monitor). I cannot imagine why install would default to 4K.
That should be a later option. I could not get out of 4K and I could not
see anything to install from a 4K TV.  Now I get a new monitor and
everything seems ok, my monitor resolution is perfect 1920x1200, and I
proceed to install with special drivers enabled because I want
proprietary nvidia drivers. It installs and boots from hard drive and
things seem to look ok. However, first software update kills my monitor
resolution to 640x480 with no option to change in the display setup. It
does not have any other modes and xrandr confirms it also. So, somewhere
something went wrong and Xorg is nolonger is able to find the right kind
of match between my card and monitor.

I have no idea as to how to proceed.  I want to know how this
happened so that I do not get hit with the same issue next time I
upgrade to 22.04. After all, this is free SW and I want to do my part
rather than just complain.

In the past, the issues have been getting mythtv working. This time
it is getting install going well.

Regards
Ramesh
