Charles, et. al.
No script needed. That's the hard way.
I go to the menu, the whisker menu in my case - I use XFCE.
* Hover over the icon for an application on the menu
* Left-click, holding the button down
* Drag to the panel
* Watch for a vertical, red line to appear
* Release the mouse button.
It's tricky but works.
To re-position:
* Right-click over the icon on the panel
* Select MOVE
* Drag and drop.
Note that panels can be backed up / saved for the future. I've found this to
be useful to have after a re-install.
