[xubuntu-users] Having to login twice to get to desktop after reboot of virtual machine

I'm having an issue with logging into Xubuntu 23.10 after starting up a
virtual machine in both KVM and Proxmox hosts.  After booting the VM, I
try to login through lightdm and the authentication seems to be
successful at first and I see the screen change like it's going to go
into the desktop, but then something fails and I get sent back to the
lightdm login window.  When trying to login a second time right after
that, it works and I make it into the desktop successfully. This is on a
brand new install of Xubuntu 23.10 from a verified ISO.

Is this a known issue?  I can't find anyone else having this specific
problem online, but I'm seeing it on multiple different virtualization
hosts in different environments.  Thanks.
