I don't see an obvious problem from the logs other than essential apps
are not being upgraded/installed.
At earlier steps in the upgrade process, if you are selecting to
preserve current apps/settings, those choices could be preventing the
installation/upgrade of new components. I don't enough of the Xubuntu
components to understand what/how essential parts are connected to each
other.
Another option to check on is an old bugaboo: are you running out of
disk space, either on the volume to be upgrade or in the /boot volume
(where you should only have 2-3 kernel images)?
The sudden halt without explanation is a common result of a lack of disk
space.
