What is the filetype of the link (if it's not a web page)? Can you post 
the URL?

I have had this happen once or twice and it seems to be related to a 
utility which specifies what app to use for what type of file, and this 
is sometimes misconfigured, but other times Thunderbird ignores it and 
tries to open the resource itself, and gets itself into a twist.
