Looks like this is exactly right, there is no problem from the
EuroPython 2009 WiFi.  I will recheck this evening using Vodafone, but
it does look like their mobile Internet is interfering with traffic in
some way.

I note that Vodafone have strict access control in place -- there are
some perfectly reasonably websites that Vodafone refuse to allow access
to, putting up the "You have to be over 18 to access this website, phone
your operator to get access".
