I verified that this is a problem by umounting the nfs directories, restarting
dbus, restarting gdm, and logging in. no problems.
However, I'm not sure if it is a general nfs problem or the more specific
problem of the user account being mounted via nfs. Any time HAL doesn't fail is
when the user account is on the local machine. I'll look more into what happens
when the user account can be seen (via NIS) but there are no mounted directories
(ie. /home/user isn't available)
