Summary: After a crash, gdm will freeze after logging in and fail
to begin loading Gnome
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: gdm
AssignedTo: seb128 at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: xeon at austin.rr.com
QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
It's ALMOST reproducable, crash an Ubuntu system twice or so and it will begin
failing to load Gnome. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will stop gdm and return a user to the
console. As a means of recovering in case it was a crash (which it shouldn't be
because it was a manual Ctrl+Alt+Backspace), it will reload gdm. Many distro's
do this, but they do it more elegantly by not reloading after 3 tries. Ubuntu
persists to load. Also, if one Ctrl+Alt+Backspaces and then does a manual
startx, gdm will blue screen the entire Gnome session over and over again.
I suggest either not reloading gdm after a Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or ceasing after 3
tries. I also suggest having gdm check if there is already a Gnome session on
the console before interrupting the user by rending the entire screen unusable.
