Can you please do

  sudo killall hald
  sudo hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no 2>&1 | tee hal.lo

then wait until the flood settled, and then ^C and 

  sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal start

to restore hal? Please attach hal.log here.

I just tried it with a vfat and an ext3 partition on my USB stick, worked fine.
Please also give me the output of

  $ sudo blkid /dev/sda2

(or whatever your ext3 partition is).
