I confirm this bug as well. You can put text into it by clicking with the middle-mouse-button.
When selected it seems like the focus is overridden by the currently active window, so this might rather be a bug in compiz.

When opening the Gnome-Menu, the focus in the deskbar becomes visible, but you still cannot type and upon closing the menu, the focus disappears again.
