Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30019

Affects: hal (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I'm running Ubuntu Breezy and have one Asus DVD drive and one Asus CDRW drive.
With "hdparm" I added a DMA support in hdparm.conf for those drives.
>From now on, when CD or DVD disc is in the drive EVMS service halts during boot. It requires a restart - sometimes it works after 2-3 restarts!

I tried to disable the EVMS service. Then, when Ubuntu is booting, HAL
takes about 10 seconds to load (normally, it loads instantly, without
any waiting). Although it says "OK", Disk Manager will not work and
autoload will not start the cd/dvd every time.

Actually, I think the real problem is HAL not EVMS.
I changed the EVMS parametres in /etc/evms.conf, and I added a CDRW drive in "Exclude" section. EVMS works (excludes one drive), but sometimes HAL still requires those 10 seconds to load.

I noticed in forums that many people complained about this DMA & HAL
issue, starting from Hoary.
