You can install beagle an beagle-python then add beagled to you session then Go to preferences in deskbar-applet and choose beagle live search. Beagle takes a little time to search you hardrive you can control what beagle indexes by choosing System->Prefereces->Search & Indexing. 
Searching you hardrive let alone indexing it is hard so it's natural that deskbar doesn't do it by it self.
