I loaded the 'ppa' module by hand, the kernel detected the parport drive properly, and created /dev/sda accordingly. So far so good. Then I proceeded with the test procedure described in that wiki page.

To make it short, it seems that you are right... the log files are empty (nothing is logged upon the insertion of the disk), and when I run hald in "debug"/verobse mode, when I insert the ZIP disk, it does not print a single message, not a word, not even a single character...

As for the command you asked me to type, here is the ouput:
HAL_PROP_BLOCK_DEVICE=/dev/hdd
HAL_PROP_BLOCK_DEVICE=/dev/hdd
