Bug description:
James Troup was kind enough to help track this down on IRC.

this script is enough to trigger the problem:

rm -fr test; mkdir test; cd test; bzr init
    for i in $(seq 1 1200); do echo a > ${i}; done; bzr add; bzr ci -m "init"
    bzr st # works
    bzr st * # fails

Will trigger it. If I delete "_readdir_pyx.so", then the status is
  happy.

Marked High but not Critical, because we've had this problem for a
while (confirmed in 2.0.4 on Hardy, and 2.1.1 on Lucid, and in bzr.dev
  on Lucid.)
