After recovering as in previous comment, did a CD install of image 20111011 which went O.K.
Updated so presumably now at ship level.

I've been testing Alpha's and Beta's for the past 4 years.  Somehow
among the last things to get fixed are Install, Grub, and Shutdown..

Not sure how to test Precise Pangolin on this pc because of this bug.

Sure would be nice if Install didn't screw up Grub until Install
completed error free, or in case of error put Grub back where it was
before install....

  Ubuntu 11.10 at release level USB stick install on IBM Thinkpad T40 got "we're sorry, installer crashed.
  Last message on progress bar was "Configuring apt"  
  T40 running Ocelot Alpha, Beta, etc. just fine as well as Narwhal and Lynx LTS.
