The error in the logs is:

Setting up ttf-mscorefonts-installer (3.3ubuntu3) ...

These fonts were provided by Microsoft "in the interest of cross-
platform compatibility".  This is no longer the case, but they are
still available from third parties.

You are free to download these fonts and use them for your own use,
but you may not redistribute them in modified form, including changes
to the file name or packaging format.

All fonts downloaded and installed.
Search pattern not terminated at /usr/share/perl5/Debian/Defoma/FontCache.pm line 148.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/perl5/Debian/Defoma/Font.pm line 11.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/perl5/Debian/Defoma/Font.pm line 11.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/bin/defoma-font line 8.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/defoma-font line 8.

Version 3.4 and later of msttcorefonts no longer uses defoma, so this
issue can be considered fixed.
