I had correctly grepped, it was fine.  However, the bug was upstream in
the maas enlistment preseed which was setting an http proxy :(

  incorrectly claims "no support for specified release"

Status in “choose-mirror” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  In the netboot installer, it's failing to get past choose-mirror
  because it claims that:

  WARNING **: mirror does not support the specified release (precise)
  INFO: mirror does not have any suite symlinks

  However the wget command it is showing works fine in a busybox shell.
