Title:
Desktop installation failed in upgrade from Kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

My system is a fairly new HP laptop, a Pavilion dv6770se with attached
terminal and keyboard. It has adequate resources for running Linux...
It is a dual-boot system that will run either Linux or Win Vista.
FWIW, as a learning experience, I had built and installed the prior
kernel myself, although I don't think there is anything special or
  custom about it.

Evidently the server got bogged down because I did the upgrade while
not realizing that it was release day. Installation failed several
times and I rebooted and resumed the upgrade several times, too--
until I finally booted the new system. During installation, I
accepted the defaults, so I did nothing special.

  The results:
grub and the screen where you choose the type of desktop you want both come up OK, so it appears that the kernel upgraded OK. After I select a desktop and login, everything goes wrong.

When I first rebooted and launched KDE, the screen came up with lurid
colors and wavy, flashing bands, showing strange characters and
symbols. I've seen this several times since, although usually the
screen goes black or gray after failure.

The only thing that works with any reliability is the 'xterm' desktop
selection, with its single console window. Even with it, I need to do
some trivial things in the xterm so as to maintain focus for a few
minutes. Otherwise, the whole desktop disappears, and then I need to
  reboot.

Gnome did come up once, but there were no controls. Now it comes up
for a moment and then disappears. KDE doesn't come up at all. The
"failsafe" modes don't work either. So the system is virtually
unusable -- unless I boot to Vista. :-(

I'm not a linux newbie (except in managing desktops), so this is a
really shocking and unpleasant experience. I'd appreciate any help
you can give me, and if you want to send me over to an ubuntu forum,
  that's OK, too.

I've already made several other bug reports associated with the earlier parts of this incident. They are:
  Bug 464605
  Bug 464087
  Bug 464090 (a duplicate)
  Bug 464139
