Title:
  Ubuntu installer deletes partitions

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello community,
my brother wanted to install ubuntu and ended up with deleted partitions:

  1) he booted with feisty 7.04 install cd
  2) he entered install menu and chose "partition manually"
  3) the installer recognized windows is installed
  3) he deleted an old linux partition (created by me) and wanted to create a new one
  4) an error occured in the installer: the ext3 partition couldn't be deleted
  5) two other windows partitions (vfat) with unbackuped, important data vanished, one - the main windows parition (ntfs) stayed
  6) the computer isn't harddisk-bootable any more.
  7) The ubuntu installer can't find the last partition, windows recognizes it, but not the other two
  7) I told him not to tamper with the space where the other partitions have been

Can you help me / my brother: is there a way to restore the windows
partitions without knowing their original size? is there a backup on
the disk, like the vfat-filesystem has?

Thank you for your help, you know: it's important ... :_(

  Thomas Lauckner
