Ok. I am unable to reproduce this issue on an Ubuntu system with the
kubuntu theme packages installed; I have tested both the kubuntu logo
theme and the kubuntu text theme, and both work as expected.
Harald, ScottK pointed at you for help with this. Are you able to
reproduce this issue? Is some plymouth package perhaps missing a
dependency here that happens to be satisfied on Ubuntu but not Kubuntu?
Nightfall, just to confirm: if you run 'sudo touch /forcefsck' and
reboot, you aren't shown any text?
Did you have encrypted home directories (ecryptfs) or full-disk
encryption?

Title:
No progress indicator or other message during hard disk drive
partition check
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
When a hard disk drive partition is checked, nothing indicates that
fact. Also, there is no way for the user to know how to cancel the
check (if that's possible any longer at all) in case he somehow knows
about the check being in progress - a message like "Press 'C' to
cancel" used to be displayed in Kubuntu oneiric for example.
Plymouth theme is plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo (13.04ubuntu11); plymouth is
0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 (Kubuntu raring installed on Samsung NC10).
This worked in Kubuntu oneiric.
Maybe this one is related to bug #966480/bug #1170421 (no messages
displayed)?
