By default we try to connect to the internet and verify that the connection is fully active by verifying the checksum of http://start.ubuntu.com/connectivity-check.html
We also do a geoip query to http://geoname-lookup.ubuntu.com/?query=London to establish user's location/timezone and preferred keyboard layout.
Language packs are automatically downloaded and installed such that one doesn't see "Incomplete language support" upon rebooting.
One can choose to further download remaining security fixes and updates as well as third party drivers.

In the top right corner there is network indicator which lets you easily disable internet connection.
Alternatively unplug your network cable or switch off wifi using hardware switch/keyboard buttons (many laptops have them)

Title:
Live CD should ask permission before connecting to internet

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Yeah been using Ubi for a long time.... and occasionally - I need to
use a LIVE CD on a Windows system....

  That's fine.

BUT when I run Ubi, I usually run it firewalled and the same with
  Windoze...

But what horrifies me a little bit, is that the Ubi live CD's upon
booting, the OS has the internet connections ON and running - by
  default.

Why? because I am usually backing up my carefully debugged and nasty
free systems at the same time - and the last thing I want to happen is
to be hacked - when the original data sets and backup drives are on
the system at the same time.

But this DEFAULT internet on setting ought to be switched off -
because it's so passive and it's easy to overlook, even for me, and
it's potentially a real trap for the novice.

I feel that the internet connection must be turned off by default and
a firewall with reasonably good and secure settings, ought to be
enabled by default on start up as well.

I also feel that a notice to "enable the internet connection" ought to
  be flashed on screen..

  AND

I also want to see a FLASHING internet logo - as in your internet
connection is ACTIVE and sending and receiving traffic.

This passive "dead screen" logo has to go.... and make it flash in
interesting colors... like bright orange and green or something.

  Regards

  Shane
