The full error message is something we need to debug this issue.

To open a terminal, open the Dash and search for 'gnome-terminal'. Once the terminal is open, run following commands and attach their output to this bug report:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get upgrade

The first command will update the package information, the next one
checks for broken packages and the third one will perform an upgrade.

Bug description:
  The issue seems to be with the update manager for Oneiric Ocelot. I
  have a large red and white no entry sign on the menu bar and it's
  driving me nuts!
