Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid I am not even being allowed to run the
suggested commands. Also, I have tried to open Ubuntu Software Centre &
even that is not opening.

Bug description:
  The issue seems to be with the update manager for Oneiric Ocelot. I
  have a large red and white no entry sign on the menu bar and it's
  driving me nuts!
