This bug doesn't look like it is specific to the Gnucash package. In the
hope that it is a better suited package, I am hereby reassing it to the
debian-installer package.

  boots up, asks various questions, downloads various components, says
  "starting up the partitioner", accesses discs for a couple seconds,
  screen goes blank purple, and it hangs thus.  same on either my laptop
  or my desktop.
