8.10 has reached end of life.  Have you had this problem on 12.04 or
later?

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: debian-installer

  Ubuntu Server 8.10-beta AMD64 stops install at main install page 75%
  storing language. The CD player is dead at this point with no further
  install activity. I have tried 3 different hard drives so far.
