You can't install grub to an ntfs partition.  You must install it to the
MBR ( /dev/sda ).

  fails to install grub

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I am reinstalling ubuntu 12.04 from a live disc on a formatted
  partition, sda4.  sda2 is flagged as boot, but it fails to install
  grub on that partition.  sda2 is ntfs format. dual booting with
  windows 7. worked fine before reinstall.
