Because this bug is so old, much of what you have described is no longer
applicable. If you are still having trouble with a currently supported
release, please update the description and be as specific as possible.

** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)

Title:
Grub does not prompt correctly for install

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Installed Ubuntu on 2nd hard drive, first partition. Had to use
Manual configuration as hard drive is already partitioned, Had to use
Advanced button to designate where to install grub help files.
Suggested location is (hd0), which works, but not where I wanted it.
Tried (hd1) which failed to set up boot process, then tried (sdb) and
(sdb1), but these were deemed invalid. Finally tried (hd1,0), and
this worked. Should have either given list of acceptable
drives/partitions,.immediately rejected invalid choice, or accepted
  alternate drive designations.
