This doesn't appear to have anything to do with grub since you get past
grub. Karmic has reached end of life, is this still happening on a
supported release?

Title:
  [Karmic] grub2 wont boot 'quietly.'

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

  On a fresh install of Karmic, I was able to reboot several times with
  out a problem. Once the computer is shut down, it wont boot up again.
  It starts booting, then hangs on a black screen. It can be booted from
  a live CD (boot from 1st HD) or by booting into the live CD then
  rebooting and taking the CD out of the tray during the reboot.

  If I enable the menu in the /etc/default/grub file, it still wont boot
  to desktop, but it will boot into recovery mode if selected.

  I changed:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
  to:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash"
  in the /etc/default/grub file and everything boots fine, just not quietly. Every time I try to use 'quiet' it hangs on a black screen.

  I do have kernel, sys and message logs from a successful verbose boot,
  an unsuccessful quiet boot and a successful boot from a live CD if
  that will help.

  I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 [Karmic], (GNU GRUB 1.97~beta4).
  All software packages are up to date.
