I do not really understand the background of this question. The original
text was posted as question 151811 by Mark Hopkins on 2011-04-06 and
marked as solved by him on 2011-04-07 (root cause apparently errors in
proxy definition).

Now, two and a half years later, this is posted as new bug by reema.

By the way, meanwhile karmic is really in "End of life" status, and the
repositories have been offloaded to old-releases.ubuntu.com

Taking all that into account, in my opinion this bug report should be
closed as invalid.

Title:
no suitable download server was found

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am unable to update using update manager. I went through a period
when I had no internet so I knew it could not update, then got a
secure wireless link and the update manager no longer worked. From
the message, i sounded like the speed was too slow, so I connected
next to the router and same message. Are the repositories for 9.10 no
longer available? I tried to upgrade, but i was told to check my
internet connection, it works fine even for some video streaming so i
  don;t know where to start.

Error message I get when trying to upgrade is:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted
because of network problems. If available an older version of the
failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored.
Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the
  preferences is correct.

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I tried going into settings and choose a download server and hit the select best server button, this was the error message I got.
No suitable download server was found
  Please check your Internet connection.

My internet connection works, I am using it to ask this question.

I am not very well versed in Linux, so if someone could help me, it be
  very much appreciated

  Thanks, Mark
