In response to the suggestion to create fresh installation media I
downloaded 14.04 again (I originally reported the bug with 14.10 but had
previously hit issues with 14.04). Firstly, this is 14.04.02 now and
I've double-checked the MD5 sum before creating bootable instance on an
8GB USB stick. This may be a different crash but the situation is likely
quite similar: trying to install on a fake RAID array on sub-standard
hardware.

Normally, I can get as far as the partition step of ubiquity and am
greeted with a dialog that says "??? ???". This seems to be related to
the error in system logs: "couldn't find valid filesystem superblock".
As this is from resize2fs, I tried resizing partitions myself ahead of
running ubiquity and instead get this crash after the copying of the
system is near complete.

BTW, I noticed similar bug entries just now while searching for this bug
to attach to. Will investigate.
