Title:
System Completely Hangs When Compiling Certain Packages

Status in gcc-5 package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Distributor ID: neon
Description: KDE neon User Edition 5.9
  Release: 16.04
  Codename: xenial
  Linux neon 4.4.0-62-generic #83-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 18 14:10:15 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  Package: gcc
  Version: 4:5.3.1-1ubuntu1

  Package: make
  Version: 4.1-6

  To reproduce:
In a live session, download hashcat source - https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat
  Requires opencl-headers (install through apt)
Run make in the hashcat-master dir.

Outputs gcc compiler flags, then after about 5 - 10 seconds, the
system completely freezes up. Mouse becomes unusable, audio starts
looping if playing in background. Requires REISUB to reboot if frozen.

Reproduced on two different laptops, and on a Mint 18.1 live session.
Also encountered when trying to compile an Excel import package for
RStudio, so I think this issue probably affects most instances of the
current gcc version under certain conditions.
