We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago
and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy) reached end-of-life on July 17, 2014.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported in a
currently supported version of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you do and
in which version of Ubuntu otherwise this report can be left to expire
in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

Title:
Software Updater gives erroneous advice for full '/boot' partition

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Incomplete
Status in update-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After attempting to install the new kernel, Software Updater
  complained with the following message:

  ---

  Not enough free disk space

The upgrade needs a total of 76.3 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please
free at least an additional 159 k of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your
trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using
  'sudo apt-get clean'.

  ---

The sentence about emptying the trash and cleaning temporary package
files is misleading advice. A failed installation to the '/boot'
partition should result in the user being informed to delete old
kernels, perhaps with a link to this article:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/removing-old-kernels. Of course,
'/boot' may be on the same partition as '/', in which case the current
advice is applicable. If it is possible for Software Updater to
determine that '/boot' is on its own partition, it should use this
information to give more relevant advice.
