The dmesg output shows the issue:

Your hard drive had an hardware issue. That's why your file system was
read-only.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a clean hard drive in a Macbook
Pro, Late 2007 model and everytime it gets to downloading updates from
the internet, it crashes.
