You might try the following commands:
sudo apt-mark auto libmutter-12-0
sudo apt-mark auto mutter-common
sudo apt-mark auto mutter-common-bin
sudo apt-mark auto gdm3
sudo apt-mark auto gir1.2-mutter-12
sudo apt-mark auto gnome-shell
sudo apt-mark auto gnome-shell-common
sudo apt-mark auto libadwaita-1-0

This worked for me, but I was also trying a bunch of other stuff, so it
might just be coincidental. At the risk of turning this into a cargo-
cult effort, it might be worth a try.

Looking at your apt.log, you might also need to run the command for a few other packages:
sudo apt-mark auto gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
sudo apt-mark auto libgs9
sudo apt-mark auto libgs9-common
